Why Asus ZenBook and VivoBook Owners Keep Their Laptops Longer Than Most
I bought my Asus ZenBook about four years ago and at the time assumed I’d replace it within three. That’s roughly the cycle I’d been on with previous laptops — not because they broke, but because they started feeling slow, or the battery had degraded enough that the machine was only usable plugged in, or something about the experience had drifted far enough from what I needed that a new machine seemed easier than dealing with it.
The ZenBook didn’t follow that pattern. Three years in, the performance was still completely adequate for how I used it. The display still looked good. The keyboard hadn’t developed any issues. The one thing that had genuinely deteriorated was the battery — it was lasting maybe two hours on a charge instead of the seven or eight it managed when it was new. What Makes These Machines Hold Up
Asus put more engineering effort into the ZenBook and VivoBook lines than the price points might suggest. The chassis materials are durable — the aluminum construction on the ZenBook series in particular handles daily transport without the flex and wear that cheaper plastic bodies develop over time. The internals haven’t been a bottleneck either. A ZenBook or VivoBook bought with a mid-range processor in 2020 or 2021 is still handling everyday workloads in 2024 without meaningful slowdown. The tasks most people use laptops for — documents, spreadsheets, video calls, browser-based tools — haven’t become dramatically more demanding in ways that would make a four-year-old machine struggle.
The weak point, consistently, is the battery. Lithium-ion cells degrade with every charge cycle regardless of how well the machine is made, and a four or five year old laptop battery has typically lost enough capacity that the unplugged experience has changed substantially. That’s not a flaw in the machine — it’s just how the chemistry works.
The Math That Keeps People on the Same Machine
A replacement battery for a ZenBook or VivoBook typically costs a fraction of what a new laptop does. A new entry-level machine in the same category costs several hundred euros or more, and the performance difference between a new budget laptop and a four-year-old mid-range machine is often not as large as the price gap implies.
The calculation shifts even further when you consider what else comes with a laptop replacement: the time spent migrating data and setting up a new machine, the adjustment period to a different keyboard and trackpad, the compatibility questions with existing software and peripherals. None of these are insurmountable, but they’re real costs that don’t exist when you replace the battery and keep using the machine you already know.
People who’ve run this comparison tend to stay on their existing machine. The ones who replace it often find that the new machine doesn’t feel dramatically better in the ways they actually use it day to day.
Getting the Right Battery for the Specific Model
The ZenBook and VivoBook lines span a wide range of configurations, and the battery specification varies across them. A ZenBook 13 uses a different battery than a ZenBook 14 or a ZenBook Pro. VivoBook models similarly differ by year and configuration. Getting the wrong battery — one that fits physically but has a different cell capacity or voltage profile — means getting a battery that either underperforms or doesn’t work correctly with the laptop’s charging management system.
Matching by the specific laptop model rather than by connector type alone is important. Replace it with something matched and quality, and the machine has a realistic path to year six or seven without the experience deteriorating in any meaningful way.
That’s a different relationship with hardware than most people expect to have, and it turns out it’s a fairly straightforward one to maintain.
